Self-love is about taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally. It’s about valuing yourself and your happiness. One important aspect of self-love is letting go of toxic people. These are the individuals who bring negativity and drama into your life and drain your energy. They can make you feel bad about yourself and can even prevent you from reaching your full potential. I’ve had a few toxic relationships in my life. From the toxic romantic partner to the toxic manager and colleague to the various negative Nancy’s. Their negativity and toxic behaviour drained me. I used to waste so much of energy listening, reaching or thinking about their toxic habits. It added no value to my life whatsoever. This includes family as well. I learned that in order for me to practice self-love, I needed to remove myself from people and situations which were toxic. Let’s have a look at the types of toxic people:

Types of toxic people

There are many different types of toxic people, but some common types include:

  1. Narcissists: These individuals are extremely self-centered and lack empathy for others. They may manipulate and exploit those around them to achieve their own goals. An example of a narcissist might be a boss who takes credit for their employees’ work.
  2. Gaslighters: These people manipulate others by making them question their own reality and memories. An example of this might be a partner who denies things they previously said or did, causing their partner to doubt their own recollection.
  3. Borderlines: These individuals have unstable relationships and can be emotionally intense. They may be prone to impulsive behavior and have difficulty with boundaries. An example of this might be a friend who constantly texts or calls and becomes angry when they can’t get a hold of you.
  4. Manipulative: These people use deceitful tactics to get what they want. They may use charm, flattery, or other forms of persuasion to control others. An example of this might be a colleague who always seems to be getting their way, but always seems to be doing it in a sly and sneaky way.
  5. Emotionally Abusive: These individuals use emotions as a weapon, they may belittle, blame, criticize, and make the person feel guilty and worthless, to gain control and power. An example of this might be a partner who frequently calls their partner names or puts them down in front of others.

It’s important to remember that these types of toxic people can exist in any kind of relationship and can have a significant negative impact on the mental and emotional well-being of those around them. If you suspect you may be in a relationship with a toxic person, it may be helpful to seek out professional help or support.
